It may soon be possible to charge up a mobile device using a urine powered electricity generator.
The bizarre concept stems from research being conducted at the University of Bristol in England. Dr. Ioannis Ieropoulos has succeeded in generating enough power from urine to charge up a regular phone so that it can make calls, sends texts and browse the web. The system works by passing the urine through microbial fuel cells in which it is metabolized by microorganisms and turned in to electricity.
"We are very excited as this is a world first," said Dr. Ieropoulos. "No one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it's an exciting discovery. Using the ultimate waste product as a source of power to produce electricity is about as eco as it gets."
An added benefit, according to the scientists, is that what’s left of the urine is purified and can be released into the environment without having to go through a waste treatment plant.
