Several leading astronomers believe that the first aliens we encounter will likely be robotic in nature.
The idea is based on the notion that any sufficiently advanced alien civilization is going to be capable of augmenting itself using technology to tackle its biological limitations. "I think it very likely – in fact inevitable – that biological intelligence is only a transitory phenomenon, a fleeting phase in the evolution of the universe," said cosmologist and astrobiologist Paul Davies. "If we ever encounter extraterrestrial intelligence, I believe it is overwhelmingly likely to be post-biological in nature."

The odds are that if we do encounter an alien civilization that our initial experiences with be with something more akin to an artificial intelligence than an actual biological entity. "If we build a machine with the intellectual capability of one human, then within 5 years, its successor is more intelligent than all humanity combined," said SETI chief Seth Shostak. "Once any society invents the technology that could put them in touch with the cosmos, they are at most only a few hundred years away from changing their own paradigm of sentience to artificial intelligence."[!gad]The idea is based on the notion that any sufficiently advanced alien civilization is going to be capable of augmenting itself using technology to tackle its biological limitations. ET machines would be infinitely more intelligent and durable than the biological intelligence that created them. Intelligent machines would be immortal, and would not need to exist in the carbon-friendly “Goldilocks Zones” current SETI searches focus on.

To me it begs the question whether a machine, no matter how intelligent could truly be thought of as alive. I think true AI may be possible with quantum computers modeled on the human brain and perhaps self aware. They could be programmed to replicate themselves, but does this really equate to being "alive"?

They just might be quite a Bit smarter, and Stronger ! And wouldnt even need to Eat us,but maybe control us!

Yeah I guess it wouldn't matter if you were confronted by one of these machines. I was asking more in a philosophical sense

your quite right spacecowboy342 ! AI machines that could infact be Thousands &Thousands of years in our advance,Could of actually gained the quality`s of Living beings ! We are on the threshold of this tech as we type. Maybe a few hundred years ANd were there ! So ITs going to be intresting to see Where we go and what they do ! My Mac is aready smarter than me !

i agree with those thinking ... if it's not biological, it's not life?
