Could there be anyone out there ? Image Credit: CC BY-SA 2.0 Hajor
Vast distances between habitable planets could make communication with alien life an inviable concept.
For years SETI has been scouring the skies for signs of radio signals from an intelligent extraterrestrial race, but despite its best efforts there has still been no sign that anyone else is out there.

Given however that our galaxy spans over 100,000 light years it could be argued that there may simply be no intelligent civilizations close enough for us to pick up. Even receiving a signal from our nearest stellar neighbor, Alpha Centauri, would take four years.

Recent advances in planet hunting suggest that there are an estimated 40 billion habitable planets in our galaxy, but that doesn't help if the distances between them are too large.
"On average, you'd expect the civilizations to be separated by at least 1,000 light-years in the Milky Way," said astronomer Michael Garrett. "That's a large distance, and for communication purposes you need to allow for twice the travel distance, so you're talking about civilizations that have to be around for at least a few thousand years in order to have the opportunity to talk to each other."

There is also the possibility that radio waves, being limited to the speed of light, may not be fit for communication over long distances and that a sufficiently advanced alien race might be using some other sophisticated communication system that we haven't even discovered yet.

Picking up an alien civilization's radio signals may in fact be like finding a needle in a haystack with an extremely limited window of opportunity - the odds of this could be incalculably low.

Well, I don't have a dog in this race. We can consider things on an order of probability or improbability, but no one can really be right or wrong if no one really knows. In fact, since we have no definite data (despite what some may think), all we can do is to weigh probabilities. Cheers, Badeskov

Cheers, Badeskov Gidday Mate Exactly what I think too, and I will run with the probabilities that the brilliant minds such as Greene and Hawking produce as opposed to an anonymous forum poster. String can only get more interesting from here I would say. It seems a real pity so many people prefer the musings of UFOlogy over science.

Ohh come one, named witnesses describing a 55 year old childhood recollection!! You have got to be kidding me, and because they described it a certain way you feel that is enough data to ascertain the origin of said object? What we have is an old memory that describes something the witnesses could not identify so they placed attributes familiar to them on what is more likely an explainable occurrence. These ambiguous tales are what UFOlogy has to cling to because it's got nothing. Ands this tale is nothing more than an old anecdote, people are smarter today, well some of us anyway, and identif... The analogies to the Size of Space are indeed Mind bending ! I like the way "Midnightlady" thinks ! I too when very young looked out into the Deep dark Texas skys at night this was back in the 1960`s and drew an early conclusion ,We are not alone. Knowing this was from within I admit ! But Knowing is all a person needs sometimes ! Like Good B.B.Q. and Friends ! U/M is a place to come and met like & Unlike minded people and throw each other under the FTL craft ! We all seem to have limits of belief systems But ! Thats what makes it great ! Now the Real Trick is to Stay around longer than an... [More]

How can you say that not a single UFO has ever been tracked entering or leaving space by radar, that kind of information is not generally freely available to the public. Old flying saucer deions they may be, but just because flying saucers are not seen so much now, doesn't make the Bexley UFO any less credible. Black ops in the UK didn't exist in the 1950's so it couldn't have been one of theirs.

How can you say that not a single UFO has ever been tracked entering or leaving space by radar, that kind of information is not generally freely available to the public. Because it is the truth, if you feel that is in error, I would urge you to correct it. Provide a link to a UFO leaving the atmosphere or entering it captured bt RADAR please. Have you heard of the WOW! Signal? You know how we tracked that back to the constellation Sagittarius, near the Chi Sagittarii star group? Now if we could do that with a UFO, we would know where these alleged visiting aliens might come from. Old flying sa... [More]

Mon amis... the Universe has been around for 14 billion years. Our solar system, a mere 5 billion years. I would suggest there are many many solar systems that evolved life long before life evolved in our own solar system. Why do I need a lawyer, a flack jacket, a body guard, and a jock strap to make such statements here at U-M? If we knew all the bleepin' answers there would be no topics to discuss here at U-M. Ya dig??? We discuss/speculate about the "Unexplained Mysteries" of the Universe. Why do you think at the birth of the Universe life existed? This is the most basic one can bring this ... [More]

How can you say that not a single UFO has ever been tracked entering or leaving space by radar, that kind of information is not generally freely available to the public. Because it simply hasn't. Can you give a single example of such? Old flying saucer deions they may be, but just because flying saucers are not seen so much now, doesn't make the Bexley UFO any less credible. Black ops in the UK didn't exist in the 1950's so it couldn't have been one of theirs. Of course black ops existed in the UK in the 1950's, there were honed during WWII in the 1940's. Please do learn something about histor... [More]

So what percentage of c do you think is attainable without resorting to sci-fi hypotheses? Hey s2f, I wasn't ignoring you. Its a great question with no simple answer. That said the more I think about it the faster I think we can go if fast is the goal. The voyager probes are the fastest things we sent out but they must be considered to be crawling compared to anything we have a goal for speed as the priority.
