The world's biggest particle accelerator is set to make a comeback with almost double the power.
Not content with discovering the elusive Higgs boson, physicists at CERN have been working for two years to upgrade the giant atom smasher in Geneva so that it can perform experiments at nearly twice the energy level that it was previously capable of.
Work is now reported to be "in full swing" to have everything ready to begin the next set of particle collisions by March of next year, opening up the doors to even more new discoveries.

"With this new energy level, the (collider) will open new horizons for physics," said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. "I'm looking forward to seeing what nature has in store for us."

Some of the things that the team will be looking for this time around include new clues about the nature of dark matter and a better understanding of the building blocks of the universe.

bleah ... known fact: a black hole with a diameter of 10mm can swallow out the our entire galaxy because it grows with every tiny bit of energy it consumes including light. read it! Like Rlyeh wrote there are many black holes in our galaxy, including a super massive one in the center, yet the galaxy is still here ! You still haven't shown us how the LHC is supposed to make a black hole large enough to swallow the Earth. The energy level of the LHC is simply not high enough. Not even close. Please see post 26. So why do you continue to push this idea of an Earth swallowing black hole, made by t... [More]

Maybe it is time to admit that you don't really know much about black holes Stephen Hawking has already said our understanding of black holes may be wrong. http://www.independe...es-9085016.html Maybe it is time for you to admit that what you think you know about black holes is pure theory and or could be wrong. We don't know everything, hubris can lead to bad things.

Stephen Hawking has already said our understanding of black holes may be wrong. http://www.independe...es-9085016.html Maybe it is time for you to admit that what you think you know about black holes is pure theory. I have never said that I was an expert on black holes, I have only asked for some evidence that the LHC would be able to make one, that could swallow the Earth. I will happily admit that what we know of black holes is theory. But it is theory based on observation and knowledge about physics. The idea that the LHC could make an earth swallowing black hole, is based on nothing ! The ... [More]

The article you are linking to, does not in any way support the idea of an Earth swallowing balck hole, which is what is being debated here. The article questions the makeup of a black hole, but not how they are formed. I have never said that I was an expert on black holes, I have only asked for some evidence that the LHC would be able to make one, that could swallow the Earth. ...the whole of humanity resting on the shoulders of physicists playing around with things they don't fully understand is another thing. As long as conservation of energy continues to be valid during the LHC's operation, humanity will be just fine. If conservation of energy stops being valid, then the Earth could be destroyed by you making coffee just as easily as it could be destroyed by the LHC.

No. NO. NO. They have infinity DENSITY. If you don't understand the difference, you should not bother joining in a conversation like this one. That difference is one of many reasons why a tiny, shortlived singularity is completely different to a centre-of-galaxy, star-eating BH. say what? so you admit a black home can have an infinite density but not an infinite mass? read about the difference between mass and density then. they are tehnically going hand by hand because while mass is the weight of something, density is given by the quantity of that something that can fit in.

Incorrect. Mass has little to nothing to do with weight. Mass refers to the amount of matter withen an object (whereas weight is the measure of gravities effect on an object). No black hole can have infinite mass, as there is only a finite amount of matter in the universe. Seeing that the amount o... [More]

say what? so you admit a black home can have an infinite density but not an infinite mass? Of course they do not have infinite mass; the assertion is ridiculous in the extreme and merely demonstrates that you have no clue whatsoever of what you speak. Get a primer on basic physics. read about the difference between mass and density then. they are tehnically going hand by hand because while mass is the weight of something, density is given by the quantity of that something that can fit in. This is basic high school physics and you clearly have no grasp of it. Cheers, Badeskov

This black hole nonsense is one that tends to poke it's head up regularly, unfortunately. I'll quote a post I wrote in 2008: Ah, so it's not going to create any "new" conditions or phenomena, or at least "new" to recent times. No, it is not. Such happens all the time in our upper atmosphere as we are constantly being bombarded by high energy particles from various places. The only new here is that it is under controlled conditions where we can measure exactly what happens (well, measure to the best extent possible by our measurement equipment). High energy protons from Super Novae (http://www2... [More]
