The world's biggest particle accelerator is set to make a comeback with almost double the power.
Not content with discovering the elusive Higgs boson, physicists at CERN have been working for two years to upgrade the giant atom smasher in Geneva so that it can perform experiments at nearly twice the energy level that it was previously capable of.
Work is now reported to be "in full swing" to have everything ready to begin the next set of particle collisions by March of next year, opening up the doors to even more new discoveries.
"With this new energy level, the (collider) will open new horizons for physics," said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. "I'm looking forward to seeing what nature has in store for us."
Some of the things that the team will be looking for this time around include new clues about the nature of dark matter and a better understanding of the building blocks of the universe.
