Egypt to rebuild the Lighthouse of Alexandria

One of the seven wonders of the ancient world is to be completely rebuilt near to its original location.
Constructed around 280 BC by the Ptolemaic Kingdom, the impressive structure, which towered an estimated 450ft above the Alexandria coastline, was a marvel of its time and remained the tallest man-made structure in the world for several centuries.

During the daytime the lighthouse used mirrors to help guide ships in to port while a fire played the same role at night. Sadly though the building suffered significant damage during a series of earthquakes and was finally destroyed by one in the 14th century.

Now more than 700 years later however the lighthouse may actually get the chance to shine once again after Egyptian authorities approved new plans to construct a full scale replica.
The goal will be to rebuild the ancient wonder only a few meters away from where the original stood in the coastal city of Alexandria and to do so as accurately as possible.

"The original building comprised three stages: a lower square section with a central core, a middle octagonal section and a circular section at its top," said archaeology professor Fathy Khourshid.

When it is completed the structure should prove itself a popular tourist destination while providing a unique glimpse back to an age that has long since been lost in the mists of time.

Can I live in there please? Maybe they will need a lighthouse keeper. In this modern age, that would be mostly janitorial duties. The light would be on an automatic switch.

It's still not the structure so I don't really see the point, it'll be a replica dating back to whatever year it's finished, sure, but that's it. Tourist trap, what else would it be for. I am sure that is what the Pyramids were really for. Ever hear the real story about Mecca. There was a pagan temple there and people would come from miles around to see it and honor all the gods in display. Muhammad's bunch rode into town and destroyed it. The local merchants were rightly upset. So they put up this black box and put a big meteorite in it and set it up as place for everyone had to go as a pilgr... [More]

Opinions pertaining as to whether or not it's 'relevant' won't stifle the engineering feat that it will undoubtedly be upon completion. I never said whether I thought it was "relevant" or not...

Okay. GreenmansGod and The SpoonyOne, stop it with the doppelganger stuff. That's freaky! My two bits... I don't see the point really. I thought Egypt could spend it's money on better things. But, if more monument making is what they want to do, well... I wonder what the average person in the streets of Alexandria thinks about this plan.

I think it's a great idea. I for one would love to go and see it.

If only the ancient library at Alexandria could be rebuilt with its original volumes. We will never know what knowledge was lost, possibly forever.

I love this plan. Not sure why many are poo-pooing it. They can build a lighthouse, they can even build a lighthouse in Ptolemaic-Greek style, what we cannot do is "rebuild" a lighthouse that we don't know what it looked like and only have a faint idea where it was located.... unless, of course, in Disneyland... but they don't claim to be "rebuilding" anything.
