Cherry Creek UFO still intrigues 50 years on

What did the Butcher family see over their farm in 1965 ? Image Credit: Per Johansson
A spate of peculiar sightings occurred near Cherry Creek in Chautauqua County over 50 years ago.
At around 8:20pm on the evening of August 19th 1965, 16-year-old Harold Butcher had been in a barn milking cows when he spotted a silver saucer-shaped object in the sky outside.

Describing it as a "football-shaped object hovering just above tree-level", Butcher watched as the craft "descended slowly emitting a red vapor downward from around the edges."

"He later described it as having a pair of vertical seams running up and down the side," said retired transportation safety researcher Robert Galganski who has extensively analyzed the case.

"He estimated the size to be about 50 feet long and maybe 20 feet thick."

Butcher's mysterious encounter concluded suddenly when the peculiar object rose back up in to the sky and promptly disappeared in to the clouds within a matter of seconds.
His sighting would go on to make headline news, but just a short time later a second sighting above the same farm would serve to thrust the Cherry Creek case even further in to the limelight.

"I think I remember seeing something orange like coming out of the backside of it, or underneath it or something," said Harold's brother Robert. " I don't know for sure because it's been so many years."

There was even a third sighting, this time by Harold, Robert and two others. It wasn't as clear as the previous sightings due to extensive cloud cover but all four recalled witnessing a strange glow and the faint outline of an unidentified object in the sky.

The sightings were taken so seriously at the time that they ended up being investigated by the US Air Force as part of Project Bluebook. The investigating officer and three technicians concluded that the reports were not a hoax and that something unusual had indeed transpired.

Exactly what the boys saw over the farm all those years ago however continues to remain a mystery.

That's way too cynical, even for me. If the dread pirate facebook hasn't killed this forum yet, it'll take more than just the solved mystery of UFOs. There's still the mystery of what came first, the chicken or the egg. We all can debate that topic.

One may argue that the entire event was a fabrication to amuse some bored farm hands. Or, this was indeed a witnessed and seemingly inexplicable event. If the latter, then was this a rare but naturally occurring event or truly something unworldly. Probability favors the former. Perhaps something very rare such as ball lightning or a transient luminous event of excited plasma would defy common knowledge and experience. Yet, we want to believe this event was unworldly and we perpetuate that belief by encouraging others to reinforce our belief. This of course, brings us back to the notion that we... [More]

As to the chicken and egg scenario I had eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner so therefore the eggs came first.

UFOlogy will be dead when there's no longer anything unexplained flying around in our skies. ??? How on earth could that ever happen? Well, I guess three ways: 1. We could get wiped out and therefore no-one will exist to see anything flying ever again. 2. We could stop flying (and stop throwing things into the sky) and the put up huge filter meshes so that nothing could ever be blown up there by the wind. 3. We could install a huge, and perfect (in terms of resolution and coverage) surveillance system that would identify everything everywhere. Dunno, but for me, none of those aren't very far u... [More]

Um, well it's an interesting story, but really thats all. No evidence or physical proof once again, and it was a long time ago. It could of literally been anything.

The story isnt too in depth but what caught my eye is the posted picture. That is the closest representation ive seen to one i witnessed up close. Only the rectangles were clearly lit up windows and there werent things sticking out of them. 50Ft with visible vertical seams sounds right too, only it was more top shaped than football.

I guess for a 16 year old boy, milking cows just got a touch boring. Something tells me he would have prefered playing football than milking a cow. Then his brother joins in and then 2 others, 7 more boys from the village and they would of had themselves that football team. can anyone explain this bit to me: "I think I remember seeing something orange like coming out of the backside of it, or underneath it or something," said Harold's brother Robert. BACKSIDE of what? Surely not the cow?

My favorite part of that quote is the "I think I remember". Do you now? You think you remember that? Thank god you're not my defense witness in a crucial trial.

I do believe these people actually seen UFO's but non alien ufo's. The military tested a lot of different prototypes during the cold war era. I remember watching a documentary about declassified projects. One of them was regarding roswell and how the military diverted the attention from the russians by making it appear they were covering up evidence of extraterrestrial contact. Ingenious if you ask me. :-D
