The prototype high-speed transport system has propelled a sled up to 116mph along a test track in Nevada.
Originally revealed back in 2013 by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the HyperLoop is a potentially revolutionary transportation system consisting of a network of reduced-pressure tubes.

Special pressurized capsules inside the tubes, which will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 760mph while riding upon a cushion of air, will act as carriages for the passengers.

The initial route, which would be from Los Angeles to San Francisco, could take just 30 minutes.
This week's testing of the HyperLoop concept comes courtesy of HyperLoop One, one of the companies vying for the opportunity to turn Musk's dream in to a reality.

The company has already managed to secure several partnerships including Deutsche Bahn Engineering & Consulting and the British engineering consultancy group Arup.

"We will work alongside these world-class partners to redefine the future of transportation, providing a more immediate, safe, efficient and sustainable high-speed backbone for the movement of people and things," said HyperLoop One CEO Rob Lloyd.

Was just reading about this. Potentially 750 MPH? That would only really be useful over several hundred mile distances. It might compete with the airlines once fuel costs start to skyrocket.

You can bet the first hyper-loop will be from Los Angles to Las Vegas, sponsored no doubt by the LV casino owners. If what I saw on the news was correct, they haven't fingered out how apply the brakes and slow it don't once you get it going. One major detail among many.

If what I saw on the news was correct, they haven't fingered out how apply the brakes and slow it don't once you get it going. One major detail among many. No problem at all as HyperLoop crafts are powerd by linear motors. The speed of such crafts is regulated by manipulation of the frequence of the three-phase current. To decelerate such crafts the direction of (electrical) force gets reversed and the craft slows down. During that process, electric energy gets generated and taken back into the circuit. This modus of breaking is contact-free, does not deliver any kind of abrasion, it does not ... [More]

I can see it now, people complaining about the tracks near their homes, the noise, the danger if the train wrecks. It's not safe for their kids to play on the train tracks!

I was listening to a discussion about this today, this is amazing.
