A tree at a cemetery in St Louis, Missouri was left smouldering after it was hit by a bolt of lightning.
The harrowing spectacle, which demonstrates exactly why it is a bad idea to stand next to a tree during a thunderstorm, was filmed by Jim Probst who happened to live nearby.
The scars of the lightning bolt can still be seen on the outside of the tree while the inside continues to glow red hot as a slow-burning fire gradually consumes the center of the trunk.
The footage has since gone viral online with some Internet users likening the burning tree to the portal to another world that appears at the bottom of a tree in the Netflix series
Stranger Things.
"Had to be hit by lightning and it's hollow and rotten all the way up," wrote Facebook user Lynn Niemeier. "Burning like a chimney on fire."
