Tree burns inside out after lightning storm

Posted on Monday, 6 March, 2017 | Comment icon 10 comments
A tree at a cemetery in St Louis, Missouri was left smouldering after it was hit by a bolt of lightning.
The harrowing spectacle, which demonstrates exactly why it is a bad idea to stand next to a tree during a thunderstorm, was filmed by Jim Probst who happened to live nearby.

The scars of the lightning bolt can still be seen on the outside of the tree while the inside continues to glow red hot as a slow-burning fire gradually consumes the center of the trunk.

The footage has since gone viral online with some Internet users likening the burning tree to the portal to another world that appears at the bottom of a tree in the Netflix series Stranger Things.

"Had to be hit by lightning and it's hollow and rotten all the way up," wrote Facebook user Lynn Niemeier. "Burning like a chimney on fire."

An ash tree?  It is now!  lol Real spooky to see that in a cemetery.  Would be interesting to find out who was the last person buried there.  Or who's ashes were last scattered.  Maybe the ashes were still alight!  lol

I have a railroad tie that was used as a corner post for a fence. Lightning struck it and burned the inside of it, yet it is still strong. I can get pictures if anyone is interested.

During my boyhood days of living on a farm I witnessed a tree struck by lightning. The lower part was ripped open like a vertical explosion and had steam coming out.. Very exciting for a kid!

Definitely an eerie sight to see in a cemetery! I have seen this phenomena reported and photographed before but it certainly gives it a certain supernatural quality set in a cemetery lol

I don't understand, what's so special about it? Just an ordinary tree hit by a lightning. There are billions of trees burned in the same way in the forest.

The one who claims to have first seen the burning tree is the prime suspect for arson. Set a fire, report it or even put it out yourself, and win a hero prize. Athough in this case being the center of a mystery could also be the motive. But in this case... Why didn't anyone hear the lightning strike? And what a cool story. The dog didn't seem to mind.

Eerie indeed considering the tree vividly resembles a pentagram encircled by a coven of naked witches dancing upside down at 2am chanting holy ure backwards..
