Robot is 'arrested' by police after harassing a woman in China

Credit: Sayanesy / (PD) A scenario that could easily be mistaken for something out of a science fiction movie played out on the streets of Macau, China this week.

According to reports, a 70-year-old woman had gotten quite a scare when she turned around to discover that a humanoid Unitree G1 robot had been following her.

A viral clip of the altercation shows the robot standing in front of her with its arms in the air while the woman shouts angrily and points her hand at the contraption while carrying a bag of groceries.

When police attended the scene, she complained of feeling unwell and had to be taken to hospital.

The robot, meanwhile, was escorted away by two officers.A short while later, the woman stated that she wasn't going to file a complaint against the robot's operator who, as it happens, had apologized for causing any distress.

It isn't clear why the robot had been following the woman in the first place.

The strange series of events could serve as a glimpse of things to come - a sneak peak of a future where robots are commonplace and in which humans must learn to accept and interact with them.

Question is - are we ready for such a future ?

Only time will tell.
