Staff at a mortuary in South Africa were stunned to discover that one of the bodies was very much alive.
The bizarre incident, which occurred at Carletonville morgue in Gauteng province, involved a woman who had been declared dead by paramedics after being involved in a road accident.

It wasn't until one of the morgue workers happened to check on her body in the mortuary fridge that it was discovered that she was actually still breathing.

The unnamed woman is now receiving treatment at a local hospital.
"As a family we won't talk about this unless the police, paramedics and the mortuary officials who were involved are present," said one of her family members.

"The issue is that we need answers, that's all we want and we don't have any clarity now."

An investigation in to the incident is currently ongoing.

Her pulse could have been weak enough that it wasn't detected or maybe she flatlined and the paramedics called her dead too quickly (obviously) but it may not have been completely their fault.  She must not have been breathing well when she was put in the cooler as aren't the bodies checked when they get to the morgue?.  Luckily an autopsy wasn't started. One thing the article left out was if the woman's breathing was relatively strong or shallow.

This is not necessarily an oversight by the medical team. People who have been declared clinically dead have on very rare occasions spontaneously recovered minutes and even hours later. Cold much delays the self-destruction of cells. So, in this instance the morgue served its purpose in a most unusual way.

"Staff was stunned."  I thought for sure that scientists would be "baffled."
