Hyundai's 'walking car' is now one step closer to reality

The automotive giant is working on developing a car capable of transitioning to a four-legged walking machine.
It might look like something out of a science-fiction movie, yet this futuristic contraption is in fact a real vehicle that South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai is currently working on.

Originally unveiled as a concept during the Consumer Electronics Show in 2019, the walking car has been brought one step closer to reality this week thanks to New Horizon Studio - a new $20 million development center that will enable the company to work on this and other high-tech concepts.

The idea behind the car is to provide a vehicle that can drive normally along a road, but then transform into a four-legged walker to enable it to traverse extremely challenging terrain.
Such a vehicle could prove invaluable to rescue crews working in remote areas or to bring emergency assistance to people trapped in the rubble following an earthquake, for example.

Hyundai refers to them as Ultimate Mobility Vehicles (UMVs).

"NHS Bozeman is an estimated $20 million investment in Hyundai's Progress for Humanity vision, redefining transportation with accessible, sustainable and smart mobility solutions," the company said in a statement.

"The all-new facility will serve as NHS headquarters and will support prototyping, field testing and application development for UMVs."

So this is similar to owning a Jaguar/Land Rover, except it's you that ends up walking.

Can't tell you how many times I've wanted one of those when the traffic was really bad. You know, when you start saying to yourself 'I want off of here!'.
