The 76-year-old had previously been declared dead after suffering from a suspected stroke a few hours beforehand.
Being buried alive is one of the worst scenarios imaginable and a fate that almost befell a woman who was brought to the emergency room at a hospital in Ecuador recently.

The retired nurse had been suffering from a suspected stroke and cardiopulmonary arrest, leaving doctors battling to save her life.

Ultimately, though, they believed they were unsuccessful and she was subsequently declared dead.

When family members gathered for her wake later that day, however, they were shocked to hear noises coming from her coffin and the sound of heavy breathing.
When they investigated, they were surprised to find her very much alive.

"There were about 20 of us there," said the woman's son, Gilberto Barbera. "After about five hours of the wake, the coffin started to make sounds. My mom was wrapped in sheets and hitting the coffin, and when we approached we could see that she was breathing heavily."

Officials are now investigating the issuing of death certificates at the hospital.

The woman, meanwhile, remains in intensive care.

She probably had an underlying condition known in the medical profession as 'being alive'.

Well that kind of story in not new...happened in the past...some scratches on the interior of coffins were found when digging old graves Hence the story surounding the label "croque mort" in France reserved to the people in charge of the dead...litteraly it meant that they were biting the dead (actually their big toe) to ensure they were really deceased

I’m guessing that job was assigned to the guy with the lowest seniority.

That would have solved the issue right away. They would notice she’s bleeding and therefore alive.

The woman who was found alive in her coffin has died in intensive care. Ecuador’s health ministry confirmed that Bella Montoya, 76, died from an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care. Montoya, who was still alive, was then rushed back to hospital. But sadly, after seven days in intensive care, her family said that she passed away on Saturday (18 June). The health ministry added that she had been under 'permanent surveillance' but did not provide further information on the medical investigation surrounding the case. [More]
