Suffice to say, these aren't real flowers. Image Credit: Facebook / eBay
These remarkable looking flowers, described as 'cat's eye dazzle', are as fake as can be.
In what is surely one of the strangest scams we've seen in a long time, eBay users are being conned into purchasing packets of seeds for a type of flower that doesn't actually exist.
Supposedly known as the 'cat's eye dazzle' flower, this spectacular looking plant is in fact entirely fictitious and photographs of it doing the rounds on social media are AI generated.
It is thought that the images were first posted by a user on the
National Geographic Wild Planet Facebook page, but it is possible that similar photographs have been shared online before that.
It wasn't long before the pictures went viral, fooling large numbers of people into believing that they were real flowers and prompting scammers to take advantage by trying to sell seeds on eBay.
Several hundred listings have since cropped up, but it is unclear how many actually sold.
Suffice to say - if you see one of these up for sale, steer well clear of it.
