Numbering in their hundreds of thousands, the insects filled the air on a beach in Rhode Island recently.
There's no denying that dragonflies are quite impressive insects; their large size, distinctive coloration and unusual body shape have long made them a point of study and intrigue.
That said, encountering hundreds of thousands of them at once would be a less than desirable prospect.
Nevertheless, such a scenario became reality for hundreds of beachgoers on Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island last month when an enormous swarm of the insects suddenly descended upon them.
All people could do was wait things out as the dragonflies filled the air around them.
Some could be seen trying to swat the insects away, while others grabbed their phones to take video footage and pictures of the phenomenon.
It is believed that warm ocean temperatures and wind may have forced the insects to the shore.
You can check out some footage of the swarm below.
I've noticed a number of insects that were common when I was a child- grasshoppers, dragonflies, midges and ladybirds, etc, are not so common now in the UK. An organisation that does an insect count of insect splatted on the front of cars has seen a real decline too. Shame, really. Insects are an important part of life on Earth.
Oh hell no, i'd get out of dodge really fast if they were mosquitoes, I agree dragonflies are awesome, they are so colorful as well, plus they eat mosquitoes!
A few years ago, I was walking across my yard when a huge swarm of dragonflies came flying up from behind and passed over me, just a few feet above my head. There must been thousands of them, judging by the amount of noise they made. It sounded like a small drone was flying over me. It was a cool experience.
Wow. I usually see dragon flies as rare insects. I'm happy if I see a dragonfly, that doesn't happen often. I didn't know they can gather in so big swarms ? .
