A search has been launched after a plane disappeared into thin air over the Bass Strait on Saturday evening.
According to reports, a man in his 70s and his passenger - a woman in her 60s - had been flying to visit friends in their bright-green light aircraft when they vanished without a trace.
They had been heading to Hillston airport, Condolobin in New South Wales at the time.
A major search effort has since been launched by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
"Just after 5pm on Saturday evening, concern was raised after the aircraft failed to land in Central Western NSW, after departing George Town, Tasmania at around 12.45pm," said a spokesman.
The pilot was believed to be highly experienced, though the plane was relatively new to him.
No radio communications or mayday signals were sent from the plane before it disappeared.
Actually locating the plane over such a wide area of ocean has already proven challenging.
"Any body of water is difficult to search, the main thing is though, that this is still a search operation," the spokesman said. "We are hoping to find these people alive, that's the main focus of the search."
The public has been asked to keep an eye out for any sign of the missing couple.
"Keep a lookout for any debris or something as simple as a life jacket or some airplane parts," the spokesman added.
"We stress that if you find some people in the water and it's safe to do so, please render them assistance."
As things stand, the search remains ongoing.
