Emergency responders couldn't believe their eyes when they were called to the man's home in Italy recently.
According to reports, the man was found on his bed - still conscious - with the back of a crossbow bolt sticking out of his forehead.
A concerned family member had contacted the emergency services after discovering that he had been in this state for two days and had not eaten or drunk anything during that time.
He was immediately transferred to hospital where a surgeon examined him.
The doctor noted that he could still speak, though incoherently, and the bolt was preventing him from being able to turn his head properly.
"A millimeter further and the patient would have died instantly," Maurizio Iacoangeli - the head of Neurosurgery at the Torrette hospital in Ancona - told Italian newspaper
Corriere Della Sera.
"I've never seen anything like it."
The medical team used a CT scanner to determine how best to approach the problem.
"It's not so much about removing it, but rather removing it without causing massive bleeding," said Dr. Iacoangeli. " The arrow acts like a plug. If you remove it, you run the risk of hemorrhage."
Fortunately, the surgical team were able to remove the bolt, but the man continues to remain in a serious condition.
Exactly how he had managed to shoot himself in the forehead with a crossbow remains unclear.
