Eagle-eyed Google Earth sleuths have discovered a strange disc-like object on the Antarctic ice.
Anomaly hunters have spotted some unusual things on satellite images over the years and this latest example - which looks like a dark, saucer-like disc half embedded in ice - is no exception.
Situated 90 miles from the coast of Antarctica, it can be found at - 66°16'24.5"S 100°59'03.5"E.
It is located around 45 miles from Mill Island and 6 miles from the A. B. Dobrowolski Polar Station.
Of course, given its distinctive disc shape, it didn't take long for social media users to begin suggesting that it is some sort of crashed UFO (perhaps a bit like something out of
The Thing).
But is it really as it seems ? Zooming out, the angle is a little misleading - it is possible that the disc is actually an area of shadow or a rock formation that just happens to look circular from above.
According to Professor Bethan Davies - a glaciologist at the University of Newcastle - the most likely explanation is that it is in fact a small lake of water situated within a rock basin.
"There is a small patch of snow and the warmer lake water has a lower albedo so it absorbs more solar radiation," she told
Mail Online.
"This is melting the snow, giving it the semi circular arc - not a UFO."
