The UFO Phenomenon

70 years on, family requests removal of Belgian UFO sighting memorial

A roadside monument dedicated to a UFO sighting that happened in 1955 has recently been taken down.
On July 21st of that year, paratrooper Marin Vandercruyssen - who was 18 at the time - famously witnessed a formation of five silver discs hovering silently over the E40 at Lotenhulle near Aalter.

The young man wasn't the only person to see the spectacle, either, as at least 20 other motorists had also pulled up at the side of the road to get a better look at the strange objects above them.

The incident itself didn't make the news until 2004 when Vandercruyssen finally came forward with his story. Although local officials were initially skeptical, after tracking down some of the other witnesses, they eventually accepted that the incident had really happened.

To mark the event, a memorial stone was placed at the scene of the sighting, which included the date of the incident as well as Vandercruyssen's name and photograph.
Now, however, the stone has been removed on a permanent basis following a request by the man's family as they no longer wanted to be associated with the sighting.

Vandercruyssen himself sadly died back in 2020.

It marks an end to one of Belgium's most enduring UFO mysteries and one about which many questions remain - especially concerning the nature and origin of the silver discs.

As things stand, it seems unlikely that we will ever know for sure what they really were.

I think it's very sad. The man witnessed something that hasn't been explained until today.  He wasn't crazy. I don't understand why the family is ashamed about that.

It was always part ego monument, part tourist trap. Yes, others claimed to see something that day, but the memorial was built around one mans version of the story. If his own family was embarrased and wanted it gone, that should be the end of it.

Disagree. He’s the one that came forward and then his sighting was corroborated by others who had remained silent. Who cares what his family thinks, it seems obvious that he didn’t mind having his name and face associated with the alleged event. Most of my family hated my band and I would not appreciate it if after I’m dead they request the bar downtown remove the flyer advertising a show we played in 1988 because they didn’t want their name associated with it.

Very good story. And it seems quite real, as all those other witnesses testified to the same.

Exactly it is among the UAP flap which has the most credible witnesses. I personally think the old Soviet Union finally collapsed because of this event. If indeed it is human stealth technology it's like nothing we've ever seen before.
