Filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who has been tipped to bring the show back, has offered an update on what's been going on with it.
When The X-Files debuted back in 1993, nobody had ever seen anything quite like it.

Following FBI agents Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (played by Gillian Anderson), the show quickly became something of a pop culture sensation - popularizing the idea of government conspiracies and leading whole generations of people to declare "I want to believe".

The original show ran until 2002 and spawned two feature films before returning for a brief (though much less successful) two-season stint from 2016-2018.

This would seem to have been the end of it, but then in 2023, Fox revealed that it was developing a new animated comedy series based on the show entitled The X-Files: Albuquerque.

This ultimately failed to materialize, but then another, more conventional reboot of the show was announced, this time with Ryan Coogler at the helm.

"I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast," original showrunner Chris Carter told CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko back in 2023.
"So, he's got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory."

Two years on, however, very little about this alleged reboot has surfaced - but while speaking to Variety recently, Coogler did seem to confirm that he was still working on it.

"Like my relationship with Rocky with my dad, The X-Files is one of those things with my mom," he said.

"My mom means the world to me - she's actually here tonight - so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She's fired up."

Beyond this, however, Coogler was unable to provide any specific details and was also unable to confirm whether or not David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be in the reboot.

As things stand, it seems unlikely that the show will be releasing anytime soon, if at all.

"As things stand, it seems unlikely that the show will be releasing anytime soon, if at all." That might be for the best.

Doubt the show will be any good without the original cast.  The reboot that lasted 2 seasons was not as good as the original.  The show sucked when Mulder was taken off, and replaced by Dagget, because he got abducted by aliens.  There's nothing on TV anymore except the news, but sometimes there are interesting new movies to watch online.

"I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast."  Diverse cast?  How about writing good stories and worry about the cast later.

That's a great way to ensure it gets watched by nobody other than the cronically couch-bound.

Hulu has confirmed the reboot is underway. I've been reading about this here and there. Interesting I reckon. It's taking of from where the old one left off. It's not a rewrite. Gillian Anderson has been in talks about some appearances.  I've read this will be a female lead. Perhaps that's what the diversity talk is about?  Anyway. Here's some news on the production. It's definitely going ahead according to this.  The X-Files Reboot: Confirmation & Everything We Know
