'X-Files' reboot is still in the works, new female lead is cast

The return of the iconic 90s TV series will feature two new leads and looks set to carry on where the old show left off.
When The X-Files debuted back in 1993, nobody had ever seen anything quite like it.

Following FBI agents Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (played by Gillian Anderson), the show quickly became something of a pop culture sensation - popularizing the idea of government conspiracies and leading whole generations of people to declare "I want to believe".

The original show ran until 2002 and spawned two feature films before returning for a brief (though much less successful) two-season stint from 2016-2018.

This would seem to have been the end of it, but then in 2023, Fox revealed that it was developing a new animated comedy series based on the show entitled The X-Files: Albuquerque.

This ultimately failed to materialize, but then another, more conventional reboot of the show was announced, this time with Ryan Coogler at the helm.
While things had gone dark yet again concerning the reboot over the ensuing months, we have finally heard this week that the show is still in the works and that it will seemingly follow a new pair of FBI agents as they investigate the newly re-opened X-Files.

Danielle Deadwyler has been tipped to play one of the leads, though there's no word on who her partner will be played by.

The show will still be headed up by Ryan Coogler (of Sinners fame) who will also write and direct the pilot.

"Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena," the synopsis reads.

It remains unclear whether or not the show's original stars will return in cameo roles.

Given the huge level of success enjoyed by The X-Files when it ran in the 90s - a time when interest in the unexplained, the paranormal and UFOs was at an all-time high - it will definitely be an uphill struggle for the reboot to recapture even a fraction of its predecessor's popularity.

First casting announcement and they flip the ethnicity of the lead and go DEI? This doesn't bode well. Doctor Who, here we come... (and for those who think I'm being racist, consider for a moment that only 5% of FBI Special Agents are Black. The odds of being assigned to an obscure department like the X-Files...um, no. This is pandering to plain and simple).

Same as Flying Squid...Mulder and Scully were a magical duet, music was awesome, the episodes handled quite deftly, covering a lot of topics and moreover the reflection of an era. I doubt something more can be done...and fear that this project will be a "social trends show" more than a real mystery show

Well then the real FBI  is out of touch . They need at least 50 % black . 50% gay . 50% trans . 50% disabled .50% asian . Etc the list goes on .

Admittedly, 5% is a low number and if it were to be representative of the country as a whole it would need to be closer to 14%. On the other hand, theoretically, to function effectively the FBI (and by extension, the X-Files) should be a meritocracy and not a playground for social agendas. Whether the numbers shake out as they do because of meritocratic reality, or systemic racism, I do not know. So, for now, I will withhold judgement on the X-Files. I think making the first casting announcement appear politically correct is a mistake given the X-Files core audience. But perhaps it is a one-o... [More]

I'm not expecting it to be anywhere near as good as the earlier seasons tbf . I thought the last re boot was very poor ,

Agreed. Hard to see how its going to be any good, even if they find awesome actors with the same chemistry. Reboots rarely capture the original magic.

Not sure what season i started to lose interest  , but when co stars get romantically involved it's a sure sign the writers have run out of solid stories.. Eg friends . The big bang theory. With the x files though , they made it more complicated with all the fbi  cover ups , mj 12 , secret deals with aliens etc . Nobody knew what was going on .

I agree, if they'd left it a few seasons earlier the quality wouldn't have slipped. I'm hopeful that the reboot will be re-energised, we'll see. I'm also excited for the reboot of Blake's 7, I loved that show. Hopefully one day Space 1999 or UFO will get a reboot too
