A return trip to Earth will be happening sooner than planned after an astronaut became unwell with a 'serious' illness.
The unprecedented situation unfolded this week as reports emerged suggesting that one of the astronauts aboard the orbiting outpost had been struck down with an unspecified condition.
Both the identity of the astronaut and the specifics of the illness have been kept under wraps, leading many to speculate over what the medical emergency could actually be.
The latest update indicates that a crew of four lead by US commander Zena Cardman will be returning to Earth much sooner than expected due to the unexpected medical situation.
Rumors had been swirling since Wednesday when NASA first revealed that one of the astronauts had taken ill, but refused to provide specifics for privacy reasons.
"This was a serious medical condition," said NASA's administrator Jared Isaacman.
"That is why we're pursuing this path."
A precise schedule for the return to Earth is expected within the next day or so.
According to NASA's chief health and medical officer Dr James Polk, the astronaut is stable but there remains a "lingering risk", especially given the lack of proper diagnosis.
Whatever the issue is, it's clearly not possible to treat it properly in Earth's orbit.
It's also serious enough that, for the first time in the history of the space station, NASA has taken the decision to evacuate the astronaut in question back home.
"I'm proud of the swift effort across the agency thus far to ensure the safety of our astronauts," said Isaacman.
