Financial institutions are being urged to prepare for a financial collapse triggered by news about alien life.
From the outbreak of war to the loss of jobs due to artificial intelligence - there are certainly plenty of tangible threats to the stock market that could bring about a financial collapse in the future.
But according to Helen McCaw - a former senior analyst in financial security at the Bank of England - the one thing that isn't being taken seriously enough is the threat of a collapse prompted by an announcement about the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life.
"The United States government appears to be partway through a multi-year process to declassify and disclose information on the existence of a technologically advanced non-human intelligence responsible for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs)," she was reportedly quoted as saying.
"If the UAP proves to be of non-human origin, we may have to acknowledge the existence of a power or intelligence greater than any government and with potentially unknown intentions."
McCaw argues that bank chiefs and politicians must do more to prepare for such a scenario.
"UAP disclosure is likely to induce ontological shock and provoke psychological responses with material consequences," she said.
"There might be extreme price volatility in financial markets due to catastrophizing or euphoria, and a collapse in confidence if market participants feel uncertain on how to price assets using any of the familiar method."
