Tape recordings made during the Apollo program were reportedly wiped due to a tape shortage... or were they ?
You would think that something of such monumental importance as the footage from the first manned Moon landing would have been preserved like a high-value museum piece, but incredibly, several of the original recordings of the Apollo 11 mission were said to have been wiped out and reused due to a tape shortage in the 1970s and 1980s.
But was this the whole story ?
Now, according to science communicator Tim Dodd, the tapes that NASA wiped were actually only backups of the raw transmissions sent from space.
At the time, the space agency had considered these less critical because everything had been broadcast on live TV, with copies distributed to networks across the world.
According to Dodd, NASA had never anticipated that, in the future, it would be possible to scan and remaster the tapes in a much higher resolution using computers.
Despite claims to the contrary, there was no conspiracy to erase the tapes to hide evidence that the Moon landings were fake - this wouldn't make any sense anyway as the event was broadcast to millions around the world.
Today, thanks to modern restoration techniques and surviving broadcast copies, we can still watch the Moon landing in astonishing clarity - even if the original master tapes are gone forever.
The episode remains a cautionary tale about archival foresight and how our understanding of historical value can change with time and technology.
