A new study suggests that we may have been receiving signals from intelligent aliens but simply didn't realize it.
Astronomers have been listening out for potential extraterrestrial signals for a long time, but what if we've been receiving them all along but simply mistook them for something else ?

According to a new study, one of the flaws in the way we listen out for alien messages is that astronomers tend to focus on sudden, inexplicable radio signal spikes.

The trouble is, even if a narrow radio signal was transmitted by intelligent extraterrestrials far off in space, by the time it arrives here, it may no longer be narrow at all.

Instead, it may have been distorted or 'smeared' upon leaving its home star's atmosphere, resulting in a signal that doesn't resemble what astronomers might typically associate with an alien message.
"Searches are often optimized for extremely narrow signals," said study lead author and SETI Institute astronomer Dr Vishal Gajjar.

"If a signal gets broadened by its own star's environment, it can slip below our detection thresholds, even if it's there, potentially helping explain some of the radio silence we've seen in technosignature searches."

In other words, if we could adapt our listening techniques to account for this, we may find ourselves opening the door to a whole host of previously undetected alien signals.

Perhaps it isn't that nobody is out there - we may simply be looking for the wrong thing.

SETI receives an annual budget of $25 million to $30 million...  I think it's a waste of money,

The total annual budget may be $25 - 30 million, but that number covers all of the institutes activities... things like astrobiology research, planetary science, education programs, and telescope operations. Only about 5 million of that goes to actual SETI signal searches (radio or optical listening for extraterrestrial technology).  I dont.

I agree with Hazzard: it is not a waste of money:

SETI’s been underfunded since it’s inception.

I always liked SETI and what they are trying to do... and I like listening to Seth Shostak. And it may be true that SETI has been underfunded, but that does not really solve the core problem. Even with unlimited funding you still run into the same basic physics and probability issues. Signals weaken extremely fast over interstellar distances, civilizations may only be detectable for a short window of time, and the number of stars and frequencies to search is immense. So throwing more money at SETI would certainly help expand the search, but it does not guarantee a detection. It just means w... [More]

Yes, exactly why I think it's a waste of time & whatever amount of money is made available for it- well, I suppose they could get lucky ?

Exactly. Its not that SETI isnt doing good science - they are - but the scale of the search and the physical limits make a detection extremely unlikely. Any breakthrough would basically be pure luck… or a very bad day if they happen to be close and hostile.

I think the time, effort & money spent on the SETI project would be better spent on looking at the UAP phenomenon ?

I dont see it as an either or situation. SETI at least has a clear hypothesis and a testable method... look for artificial signals that should not occur naturally. That is straightforward science, even if the odds are long. The UAP topic is a very different problem. Most cases turn out to be misidentifications, sensor artifacts, or incomplete data, and the remaining unexplained cases usually stay unexplained simply because there is not enough information. So while SETI might be a long shot, at least it is searching for a clearly defined technosignature rather than trying to untangle ambiguous ... [More]

Neither do I. What, ME? thinking it would be better to spend time, effort & money studying UAPs!? Haz me ol' mate- it was a joke?. Lighten up, chill out, dear chap?
