Radio sleuths have been left perplexed by an enigmatic radio signal that began broadcasting after the US attacked Iran.
Twice a day, a mysterious series of seemingly random numbers is being broadcast across the world.
The numbers are recited in blocks by a man speaking Persian, followed by the word 'tavajjoh' (meaning 'attention') three times, before more numbers are read out.
The strange signal began just 12 hours after the US and Israel began attacking Iran on February 28th, leading many to speculate that these peculiar numbers may be an encoded message designed to be received and interpreted by sleeper cells or agents hidden around the world.
It's a method of communication that has been used countless times before by various other countries and the messages themselves are practically impossible to decipher without the matching decoder.
The story gets ever weirder, too, because on March 4th, it seemed that someone had actually made an active effort to jam the signal, as evidenced by electronic noise that had started to drown it out.
When it was no longer possible to hear the numbers, the broadcast stopped briefly, then shifted to a different frequency and carried on as if nothing was amiss.
This suggests that someone else believed that the signal was worth blocking - could it have been the United States trying to prevent the intended recipients from receiving it ?
The fact that the signal was resumed on a different frequency also indicates that someone is both actively managing the broadcast and is keen to ensure that it continues.
As for what the message actually means - unfortunately, all we can do is speculate.
