The unimaginable scenario became stark reality for one unfortunate woman in the Australian outback recently.
If there's a prize for the most disgusting predicament you could possibly find yourself in, this particular incident - which saw a woman trapped in a sewage pit for three hours - might just take the cake.
According to reports, the unfortunate tourist had been visiting the Henbury meteorite crater near Alice Springs when she went to the long-drop toilet at the site - essentially a lavatory built over a large pit.
Disaster struck, however, when the toilet over the pit chose this exact moment to collapse, dropping the woman into a waist-deep cesspit that she was unable to climb out of.
Due to the remote location, it took three hours for emergency services to finally get her out.
Her partner even had to drive away up the highway to get phone reception to call for help.
Health and safety advisory service NT WorkSafe is now investigating the incident.
"[We have] been notified of an incident where a tourist fell into a sewage pit at the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Zone," the agency said.
"The notification was made by the agency with management of the conservation zone, as a collapse or partial collapse of a structure, which is a dangerous incident under the work health and safety laws."
Fortunately, the woman survived her ordeal with only a few minor cuts, but the incident has understandably left her shaken.
No doubt she'll be steering clear of long-drop toilets for the rest of her life.
