An Australian scientist maintains that the Bermuda Triangle enigma may not be much of an enigma at all.
There are few mysteries as enduring as the Bermuda Triangle - an expanse of ocean in the North Atlantic that spans the area between Florida, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.
Over the years, the region has become synonymous with the unexplained disappearances of ships and airplanes - often with no trace of them or their crews ever being found.
According to Australian scientist Karl Kruszelnicki, however, there is no Bermuda Triangle mystery - the entire phenomenon is simply a matter of probability.
In other words - the number of disappearance of ships and boats in the region is statistically no different than that of any other similarly traveled region of the ocean.
It's an explation that has also been echoed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA).
"There is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur with any greater frequency in the Bermuda Triangle than in any other large, well-traveled area of the ocean," it wrote back in 2010.
"The US Navy and US Coast Guard contend that there are no supernatural explanations for disasters at sea. Their experience suggests that the combined forces of nature and human fallibility outdo even the most incredulous science fiction."
So could the Bermuda Triangle really be more a case of hype and superstition than genuine mystery ?
You decide.
