This is an optical illusion. Water is highly reflective and as are windows. If you look at the back window, the one away from the setting sun, it appears as it does on the initial boat. The light is kissing the windows and becoming enhanced in the reflection in the water. Water molecules are know to break the visual spectrum when light passes through.

Hi and thanks for your interest. Firstly I cant be sure the rectangle you mention is in fact a window. It might be, I dont know. 2ndly, the photo was taken after sunset, which should rule out a reflection. It was taken while I was on holidays and I only noticed the phenomena while looking at the photos when I got home.. Cheers

If you were in the water at the same location that we see windows , you would say ohh, from this position i can see the windows reflecting light that you can not see from the dock.

It would be like a pilot seeing a mirror signaling him with reflected sunlight wondering why people on the ground can not see the sun light from the mirror.
