A large black dog dubbed a 'hellhound' has been sighted around Cannock Chase. Also known as the "ghost dog of Brereton" the creature has been described as large, black and muscular with glowing eyes.
Forget Bigfoot, panthers and UFOs...there’s something even more chilling on Cannock Chase. It’s time for the fabled Hellhound – a portent of doom – to take a bow-wow. Reports have been received on paranormal websites of the demonic dog roaming our area. The hound, also known as the ‘ghost dog of Brereton,’ has been seen on numerous occasions stalking the roads leading into Brereton. The apparition has been described as large, black, muscular, with sharp pointed ears and strangly glowing eyes. British folklore indicates that the black dog forewarns death."

Actually, "helhounds" were part of Celtic mythology, but they weren't black. They were white (a color the Celts apparently associated with death) and they usually had red ears, too. These weren't "spectral hounds," but rather, physical animals with mystical properties, said to be the hunting dogs of the Bane Shidh. If you ever saw them, it meant they were hunting you. This "modern" hellhound, as with most urban legends, is just a survival and a retelling of an old myth.

I live near Cannock Chase and regularly walk my own hound up there. There is a major problems with this story... The Cannock Chase Post is a disgrace to journalism. It's a colloquial rag full of pointless stories about the scutty lowlifes of the area read by the scutty lowlifes of the area. It has a resident psychic called "Mystic Ed" who has a bleached blonde mullet and is as mad as a mole in a crisp packet. Thanks to Mystic Ed the Chase Post regularly reports on "supernatural" happenings on Cannock Chase in the most sensationalistic and unscientific way, encouraging the scutty lowlifes of th... [More]

It was just cuddles, the towns over-weight house cat, with car headlights reflecting in its eyes. LOL to Cuddles. It's pretty creepy nevertheless. 0__O
