Big freeze could signal global warming "pause"

Scientists believe that the current freezing winter conditions in Britain and other parts of the world could signal a global warming "pause".
The rammifications could mean we'll be in for some global cooling rather than warming with colder winters expected. The shift is being blamed on a cyclic change in ocean currents.
The Arctic conditions which have brought Britain to a standstill over the past week could be the start of a "pause" in global warming, some scientists believe.

Pssssst...  @Doug1066, fyi you are replying to posters and a topic that hasn't been active in eleven years. Just saying. Maybe you want to start a new thread about what you're working on. Cheers.

My friend you are exactly right, but my knowledge is limited, unfortunately few here are able to understand what you are proposing so I doubt seriously if anyone will actually try to apply Pierson's Correlation Coefficient. If you think it will help you could explain it in more detail.  Great post though.

onlookerofmayhem: Thanks for the tip.  When I dropped out of UM about a year ago, I was active on the subject of climate change.  There was a lot I never got around to.  Consider that an update. In the meantime, it has been 11 years and the supposed cold period has not developed.  Think there might have been a problem with the orginal post? So now I will let this sleeping dog go back to sleep. Doug

I am told I have re-activated an obsolete thread.  Maybe I should just let it die.  This subject will come up again.  I'll tackle it then. To UM:  this is what happens when the oldest threads are listed first.  Maybe list the newest ones first? Doug

The big freeze was just another deluded fantasy of those who are so deep in denial that its beyond worth talking to them on any sensible subject. They know who they are. The reality is that we have flipped from a slightly cooler decade into a very mild one up here in the North Atlantic.   Br Cornelius

I can believe that, but that doesn't explain the shift in temperatures. The shift can occur 3 ways, by the green house effect, by a change in the Earths angle in its rotation, or by a change in the five major gyres: the North and South Pacific Subtropical Gyres, the North and South Atlantic Subtropical Gyres, and the Indian Ocean Subtropical Gyre. These drive and are the oceans currents and have a dramatic effect on the surface temperatures of the Earth. Currently with desalination caused by the current temperature changes in the North and South Poles and all the melting ice these currents are... [More]

These long term periodicity measurable in decades are almost all attributable to the ocean gyres, Thats why when someone sites a one decade slow down in warming as proof of anything they simply are displaying their ignorance of the mechanisms involved in heat transport around the globe. However in the case of a complete collapse of some of those gyres we would still be experiencing global warming and the planet would still be accumulating energy which could only manifest as rising temps. The issue for us North Atlantic based civilizations is that we would probably not be getting our usual warm... [More]

Well it's not really speculation at all in fact the scientific community as a whole is making the predictions based upon global warming that is effectively melting the Northern and Southern polar Ice caps and glaciers. The huge introduction of fresh water is the only factor that can effect the Oceans gyres and the effects of this are being recorded in many ways. The water temperatures at different locations around the globe prove that the waters are warming up.  But most interesting to me is the fact that non-native species of ocean life are moving North and South into waters that were once ... Is it possible you accidentally changed the ordering on the topic index using the 'custom sort' option ? The default ordering has the most recently updated threads at the top - we've never had the topics ordered with the oldest threads listed first.

That's probably what happened.  Thanks. Doug
