Team develops "event cloak" concept

A team of physicists have come up with an idea for an "event cloak" that can hide events from being seen.
The system would work by opening up a time gap by controlling the light's speed via optical fibres and could facilitate for example a criminal picking a lock without showing up on a security camera overlooking the spot.
The 14th member of Danny Ocean's team of thieves might just be a physicist, making use of an "event cloak" dreamed up by Martin McCall's team at Imperial College London.

I don't understand how scientist that resarch this, and stuff like invisibility cloaks, can sleep at night when it turns out their research will be used in so many ways that are wrong and will harm people. Guess they must be made of the same stuff as laywers, who can get a massmurderer free because of a tecnicality and claim they are just doing their job. Zam

And ``invisibility cloaks''? Scientists can research these ethically because, unlike the lay public, the scientists understand there is no way these technologies will ever be used in the manner described in scientific jou... Okay, let's be real. The most incredulous and potentially perverse technology beyond the wildest dreams of the public has existed under the DAARPA cloak for decades, well, especially following the death of Tesla. and it is always reduced to only a tidbit in the ODD NEWS blogs.

Care to elaborate? (Also note that Tesla died in 1943, and ARPA (DARPA's predecessor) was not established until 1958.)

whats DARPA? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military. DARPA has been responsible for funding the development of many technologies which have had a major effect on the world, including computer networking, as well as NLS, which was both the first hypertext system, and an important precursor to the contemporary ubiquitous graphical user interface. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA
