Man attempts DIY hernia surgery

A 63-year-old man made headlines this week by trying to fix his own hernia using a butter knife.

Police who arrived at his home were shocked to discover him on a lounge chair with the knife sticking out of his abdomen. Even more bizarre is what he did next - after pulling the knife out himself he proceeded to insert the cigarette he was smoking in to the wound.

"A man is recovering in hospital after attempting surgery on himself using a butter knife."

Strange. I was under the impression that a hernia had to be ppushed back into the stomach and not cut out of the stomach as our poor gentleman was trying to achieve.

Probably because his wife wouldn't let him play with anything sharp. I hope. Lol Why a butterknife though

Really you guys, it doesn't take a genius to see that the guy probably didn't have health insurance, so he was looking at a $15,000 hospital bill, minimum. Desperate people do desperate things. Why is it that people in dire straits are considered ignorant? Maybe he lost everything in the crash? It's happening all over the country. Even people with heart problems have to put off their health care because they don't have the money. Get off your Republican soap box and give the guy, and others like him, a break. I just see another good reason why we need socialized medicine.

Ouch! And he did it with a butter knife of all things. That had to hurt. It reminds me of the thread that was posted on here a few months back about a Japanese criminal who performed DIY plastic surgery so he could elude the police. It didn't work out well for him either.

In California there are many free clinics, and the County Hospital where he was taken treats indigent cases. He has no excuse for selfsurgery, in my opinion.
