Can overeating cause your stomach to burst ?

It's something that's often said at the table when someone has overeaten, but can it really happen ?
According to assistant professor of pediatrics Dr. Rachel Vreeman it can, there have been a few cases over the years of people who have eaten so much that their stomach has literally ruptured. Cases in 2003 and in 1991 detail accounts of individuals suffering from this very thing as a result of overeating. Normally the stomach can hold up to one-and-a-half litres, but some people have pushed this limit to the extreme with consumption of up to a ridiculous 12 litres of food and drink.
A handful of reports over the years document the tales of people who literally ate themselves to death, or at least came dangerously close.

Mr Creosote exploded ; Yes, this is exactly what will happen to you if you eat too much. And every sperm is sacred. And the universe was born from a cosmic pregnant lady. Because Monty Python is such a valid scientific authority.

I knew a fellow from Rockford IL. who ate so much his belly button was pushed out forming a ball the size of a fist. And it was permanent. He weighed in at about 400 lbs.

With people like Adam Richmond (Man vs. Food) out there promoting such behavior and obesity on the rise, this kind of stuff may just increase.

What a terrible way to die. Fortunately it's so rare that most people don't have to worry about it.

That's very nice of you and you neighbours. Thanks, but i must say that i know what it is to starve, a long time ago in another country i was working for the UN when i was taken as an ostage, i was tortured both physically and mentally, They broke every fingers on my right hand and a guy one day came behind me and put a gun against my head and shot, but he shot very closely over my head, no one can imagine the effect it has on your nerves and mind. They rarely gave us anything to eat and when they did it was something that stank and you would puke over, i lost over 40 pounds and when i was rel... [More]

I take no pity on the homeless. There are many, many alternatives. being homeless is unnecessary and downright pathetic.

Wow. What a messed up point of view, Alienated Being. I was homeless when a military injury kept me from supporting myself and there were no shelters open. Luckily, I had the fortitude to bring myself out of the depths of dispair and have since helped others in need. Compassion is obviously not high on your list.
