Can Earth survive the Sun as a red giant ?

Two planets have been found that appear to have survived their star's destructive red giant phase.
Stars like the Sun will eventually become red giants, growing exponentially in size and incinerating any planets in their path - or at least that was what we thought would happen. In contradiction to this, two extrasolar planets have been found that seem to have survived this phase of their parent star.
Astronomers have discovered two alien planets that survived the red-giant phase of their star's life cycle. The find contradicts the widely held view that planets are scorched to death when their stars expand in to red giants preparatory to extinction.

Well, if people are going so crazy about the 'extreme' weather associated with this solar cycle (not doomsday), then I can only assume that people in the future will be so wildly obsessed with a new doomsday prediction, as the sun begins to grow into a red giant, that there will be a global consensus to end life on earth before the sun does. Flip the bird to the flaming spheroid...

Well if the sun expands and burns us all up does it really matter that the planet survived?

Isn't the Sun meant to expand in 5 billion years?

Isn't the Sun meant to expand in 5 billion years? Supposed to, but: Even during its current life in the main sequence, the Sun is gradually becoming more luminous (about 10% every 1 billion years), and its surface temperature is slowly rising. The Sun used to be fainter in the past, which is possibly the reason life on Earth has only existed for about 1 billion years on land. The increase in solar temperatures is such that in about another billion years the surface of the Earth will likely become too hot for liquid water to exist, ending all terrestrial life.[94][95] and: Earth's fate is preca... It's really depressing to think about. Nothing is going to be here some day. We don't really even exist, there will be no record of us as all.

If the sun's expanding rate is getting faster, then it won't be necessary to worry about th planet's own survival; we're all going to be dead anyhow. Otherwise, very good post !! Very informative also !!
