The possibilities and consequences of such a discovery have been discussed at the World Economic Forum.

Prominent business leaders and politicians met for the annual conference to discuss potential risks and issues that may crop up in the near future including a list of five 'X Factor' items that represent dangers that can sneak up on us. One of these items is the possible consequences of the discovery that we are not alone in the universe, a revelation that could have a profound effect on society.

"In 10 years' time, we may have evidence not only that Earth is not unique, but also that life exists elsewhere in the universe," states the WEF Global Risks report for 2013. "The discovery of even simple life would fuel speculation about the existence of other intelligent beings and challenge many assumptions that underpin human philosophy and religion."

"The discovery of alien life or Earth-like planets and the implications to the world was a crucial item on the agenda at the annual World Economic Forum, or WEF, in Davos, Switzerland."

I think a clear demonstration of aliens with either no religion or religions different from ours would ultimately spell the end of our religions. Whether that would do good or harm is a different question, as so many are so dependent on their religious beliefs for their sense of purpose and future. I'm not terribly concerned about an alien invasion, unless it turns out physics as we now know it is all wrong, which doesn't seem to be likely. However, I wouldn't want to go off half-cocked building a contraption they send us instructions on how to build, as was done in some movies. If we ever do ... [More]

Please do tell your factors for this statement ? Why can the odds not be also that An Alien race just may put a By-pass right through our Solar System? It has to do with the speed of light. Unless the present understanding is way off, launching such a thing is just not going to be affordable for anyone. Combine that and the probably rarity of such a species and we can sleep nights.

Well It does seem like an Awful waist of SPACE ! Nature is very wasteful from our point of view -- look at all the uninhabitable planets.

Obviously new inventions can't be dealt with like cars that run on water or compressed air because it's a money factor to the powers to be so if intelligent life was discovered imagine the impact on that scale.

Yes, you are totally right about that Hawkin' ...since modern technology is reverse engineered from items gleaned by the military from 'exterrestrial finds' (and it still is) then rightfully, IF they want to stay here for awhile and interact with us, they must have the rights of their own intellectual property to create their own corportations and to sit at the top of that. IF exterrest... [More]

Alright D., sorry about the bad spelling of extraterrestrials... I must have been distracted by something or forgot. So what I mean is that technology is what the military and corporate business wants to obtain from extraterrestrials. This is worth millions and millions of dollars of pure profit, unimaginable wealth. Rightfully the extraterrestrials themselves IF they choose to interact with us are going to need some Earth money; which at this time it is rather a moot point that they don't have any of that. What is it that Earth people have that is worth the trading with them (other than slave... [More]
