Can you alter reality by dreaming it into being? A Lucid Dream is a dream in which the dreamer is aware that he or she is in a dream state, and may be able to control aspects of that dream. It is known that many elements found in our dreams arise from our subconscious. It is also believed by many faiths and practises that the human soul can, by meditation and the application of will, alter the very fabric of reality itself. By tapping into these abilities can we lucid dream a new reality into being? Imagine being able to dream of getting a raise, and then having that raise manifest as reality. Or finding the perfect mate, or resolving a difficult situation amicably? Can we dream ourselves into a better life? Many years ago, I had a lucid dream. In it I was pursued by a hideous monster which resembled the alien antagonist from the 1985 movie "Predator". In the dream, it chased me through a church I had attended as a child. I fled up a flight of stairs to the choir balcony, ran across the balcony with the monster no more than ten feet behind me. Exiting the balcony on the other side I was faced with another flight of stairs, this time going down. In the dream, I leapt off the top of the stairs, and setting my feet on the facing wall, executed a ninja-style back flip. Landing behind the beast, I stabbed it with a knife, dragging the blade down it's back, just to the right of its spine, from shoulder to hip.
The monster didn't die. Rather, it turned to face me, intending to finish me off. It was at this point that I suddenly awoke to the knowledge that I was in a dream. I cannot tell how I knew that I could alter my dream, but I did. Conceiving the dream to be akin to a movie playing in my head, I "rewound" the previous few seconds until we were back on the balcony, at which time I began to replay the scene.
Once again, I exited the balcony, leapt off of the stairs, and executed my back flip. The difference this time was that rather than dragging my knife down his back, I landed behind him, and sliced across the back of his neck, severing his spine. The monster died instantly.
The next day (in the waking world), my wife and I had an appointment with welfare. (I had been without a job for quite some time). Things did not go well, and we were suddenly without government benefits. Two days after that, I landed a job that paid four times what the government did. The interesting thing is that had I been jumping through the Welfare hoops, I would never had run across this lucrative opportunity.
I believe that the monster in my dream was a representation of the welfare system that we had become caught up in. By slaying the beast, I freed myself to pursue a good life, and return to a life of gainful employment.
Can we alter our reality through the power of our dreams? I think so, and in the next article we will be examining some of the dream mechanisms that might make this possible.
