A first person account of the journey to another world by any of the twelve men who have set foot on the Moon is always worth a read and Dr. Edgar Mitchell's "The Way of the Explorer" is no exception. This book however is not only an account of his trip to the Moon but also delves in to the metaphysical, from psychic phenomena to the nature of consciousness itself.
The book begins with an overview of Mitchell's history, where he grew up, his family, his career and how he came to become one of the few people to step foot on the lunar surface. The next part, which details his voyage to the Moon and everything that happened before, during and after makes for a fascinating read, from the nailbiting rocket launch to splashdown back on Earth the journey is described in great detail. The controversial ESP experiments he conducted during the trip are also covered, but it was from an experience that he had while returning to the Earth that Mitchell felt what he described as an "overwhelming sense of universal connectedness", an experience that would profoundly change his life.
Mitchell's return to Earth was soon followed by his founding of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, during his time there he would come to research a number of areas, from psychic phenomena to the very nature of consciousness. He talks about his experiences with spoon-bender Uri Gellar and the miraculous restoration of his mother's eyesight by Norbu Chen.
A large portion of the book covers in depth concepts, theories and research in to consciousness, belief, synchronicity, quantum physics, the nature of the universe and how it all fits together. This can constitute some heavy reading at times but contains some very inspiring and insightful ideas.
"The Way of the Explorer" contains something for everyone, for those looking for an account of his journey to the Moon or the research conducted by the Institute of the Noetic Sciences then you'll find that here. Those looking for something a bit deeper will find that here too, with Mitchell's theories and concepts of consciousness, the universe and reality providing a philosophical and thought provoking look at existence that most will find to be a fascinating read.
