Scientists at Murdoch University have proposed a new hypothesis in which they argue than junk DNA is essential for evolution, if correct this could represent one of the biggest advancements in evolution theory in over 70 years.
In a year that celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of “On the Origin of the Species, Murdoch scientists have made an exciting discovery. Their hypothesis, which argues that DNA junk is essential for evolution, may represent one of the biggest advances in evolutionary theory, since the 1930s. "

http://www.responsibletechnology.org/utili...e/?objectID=191 In a 2001document,[8] the agency finally acknowledged that genetic engineering carried risks that were different from traditional breeding. They described insertion mutations—a well known effect of gene insertion that damages DNA. Each GM variety may be uniquely damaged, which can lead to unpredicted problems. From the formerly secret FDA memos, FDA scientist Carl Johnson wrote in 1991, “Are we asking the crop developer to prove that food from his crop is non-allergenic? This seems like an impossible task.”[9] While there are n... [More]

http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message744005/pg1 The best thing about the human genome project is to finally explode the myth of genetic determinism, revealing the layers of molecular complexity that transmit, interpret and rewrite the genetic texts [3] (Life Beyond the Central Dogma series, SiS 24). These processes are precisely orchestrated and finely tuned by the organism as a whole, in a highly coordinated molecular ‘dance of life’ that’s necessary for survival. In contrast, genetic engineering in the laboratory is crude, imprecise and invasive. The rogue genes inserted int... [More]

Good point on the GMOs Crystal Sage. And then there's eating microwaved food, which also changes things on a cellular level.

Good point on the GMOs Crystal Sage. And then there's eating microwaved food, which also changes things on a cellular level. and probably activates unstable GMO DNA... Note it only takes environmental conditions to activate Genomes... so imagine unstable GMO's moving outside Lab Conditions... They would be mutating.. constantly... in all directions.. especially as they have added rogue... Junk DNA... http://www.indsp.org/TransgeneEcology.php Recent advances in genetics, ecology, and biochemistry is have uncovered the inherent complexity of gene expression systems. Much of this information is n... [More]

Likewise, no one knows if or how eating mutated food could affect people’s own DNA. ... You do realize Crystal, that you digest DNA that you eat correct? You're a fear monger. Eating a 'synthetic' gene is no different than eating a 'natural gene' is no different than eating a bottle of lyophilized ddNTPs (though I imagine that last wouldn't taste very good). Good point on the GMOs Crystal Sage. And then there's eating microwaved food, which also changes things on a cellular level. And by that if you mean it heats food which degrades proteins, carbohydrates and fats, thus making digestion eas... [More]

Though I suspect you are under some kind of mistaken impression that microwaves somehow magically alter food. Cooking with microwaves is no different than cooking with fire, you're simply using energy... [More]

That is a really old, old and old news! I agree, all they have done is put a mechanism to Gould's PE -Though I am not sure how this is new or revolutionary considering we have known since the discovery of transposable elements in maize that they are just another mechanism of induced variation for NS to act upon. Nor do I find it surprising that in moments of lots of new niches that species which have a multitude of ways to introduce variation are those which become the most diversified lineages, as too look like an 'evolutionary explosion'. Again, Gould's PE, not much new here.

Eating a 'synthetic' gene IS different than eating a 'natural gene'. Microwaves don't 'magically' alter food. They 'cellularly' (ok I know there's no such word) but at the cellular level food is altered. Giving people information so that they can investigate further for themselves and make their own decisions is not 'fear mongering'. A 'synthetic' gene is no different than a 'natural' gene -Ones produced via natural selection the other via artificial selection or an even more expedient nucleotide recombination event. Either way, genes are still made of the same thing -Nucleotides. Which turn o... [More]

Man's natural.. well served survival instinct... and we can safely agree that the full extent of including GMO's to our natural habitat... our only world... is unknown... Note the widespread outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses, The Pharma bombarding us with IBS Treatments.. digestive aids... ... Adding new GMO'd probiotics.. yeasts to our food chain... http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlere...cgi?artid=91691 our findings indicate that the true gene transfer rates in vivo are higher than the rates determined in vitro, which means that there are indigenous effects in the GI tract that promote a higher rate of transfer than the rate observed in vitro. Similar “hot spots” for gene transfer have been identified in the environment (for example, the bean ph... [More]
