Star Trek's warp drive: not impossible

One of science fiction's most prominent space-faring technologies, the warp drive, is potentially not impossible. As the world's space agencies prepare for a mission to return to the Moon attention turns to develop propulsion systems capable of taking us both there and beyond our solar system.
The warp drive, one of Star Trek's hallmark inventions, could someday become science instead of science fiction. Some physicists say the faster-than-light travel technology may one day enable humans to jet between stars for weekend getaways. Clearly it won't be an easy task."

ugh my head hurts now from all this space time warp wave riding talk anyway when i was a boy i imagined cell phones. not the gigantic block ones in the 80's, i mean the one i have in my pocket this very moment

This might also be the reason there are massive black holes at the centre of spiral galaxies. Swalloping up concentration of planets and stars and eventually, as one theory suggests, a whole galaxy. The question is, where does all the matter go? Some theorize that this matter empties out into its own private universe.

Some theorize that this matter empties out into its own private universe. And I've also heard theories that we are inside a giant blackhole (one which might start collapsing in itself some day) And I for one really appreciate the information/theories on black holes you're providing

Some theorize that this matter empties out into its own private universe. So, you are speculating that every black hole empties into a different and unique universe? Regarding the theory on worm holes, it could be argued that black holes are in fact giant worm holes themselves.

So, you are speculating that every black hole empties into a different and unique universe? Regarding the theory on worm holes, it could be argued that black holes are in fact giant worm holes themselves. Except that according to most theories, you wouldn't survive going into (/through) a black hole... So unlike on black holes, going through a wormhole you'd have an actual chance of surviving... But yeah, if black holes are indeed other universes and we are in a black hole, then the whole thing would be one (infinitely?) large multiverse... Is there a maximum size for a black hole by the way?.... [More]

Black holes are thought to converge to a single point (the `singularity') - this means that the curvature of space, or the increase in gravitational strength is always increasing. You die in a black hole because at some point the gravity pulling down on your feet is so much greater then the gravity pulling down on your head that it stretches you out like spaghetti and rips you apart (assuming you jumped in feet first). A worm hole would converge then open up again. If the wormhole is too steep you could still get ripped apart, hopefully you thought of that before jumping in. I don't think ther... [More]

While everything you say is the predominant theory of the day it is in fact just that, theory. For all we know a small or medium black hole could in fact work as a worm hole. When I say small/medium I am referring to a size by which you may just survive a trip to the other side. In fact, if we were able to come up with a compact ship that is spherical in shape and made out of a material that would be little effected by the gravitational pull of the black hole but rather shoot thru it like a pea thru a drinking straw, we might just see what's on the other side. Of course I'm likely full of shee... [More]

Well if we had an understanding of gravity to the point where we could create and manipulate black holes, we probably would eventually be able to manipulate local gravity the other way also and so form an area where a black hole does not immediately crush a starship. But, the energy needed would again be fantastically huge. It is possible that the kind of technology where a ship generates a black hole to warp space could also be used to warp space in a way to generate a wormhole, but I'm not sure how in the heck you would be able to determine the other end. A wormhole with an unknown end would... [More]
