Where did Mars' magnetic field go ?

It is believed that the magnetic field of Mars that may have once made it possible for life to have survived there could have been lost due to a massive asteroid bombardment in the planet's distant past.
If you've seen The Core then you know that the only thing between us and instant space-death is a magnetic field. You also know that's the only thing that's even heard of real science in the entire movie, but it's a pretty important one - and could explain why the otherwise eminently habitable Mars is such a barren wasteland."

The martian core might have cooled. But where is venus's mag field. it's core shouldn't have cooled yet.

i doubt that 4 billion years ago mars was starting to lose its water while mars was losing its magetic field. its more likely that something wiped out mars' atmosphere, then the heat made the water disapear. i dont know much about magnetic fields, but if mars did lose its magnetic field, wouldnt it screw up its orbit or its rotation?

"The Core" was one of the most unscientific claptrap movies ever made. It made my brain hurt from the inaccuracies and patently wrong facts. It's no surprise that people with half a brain and some science education panned it as incredibly stupid.

The Big difference between Venus, Earth, and Mars is the OUR MOON. If in the first billion years of world formations Venus were to have been struck by a large body making an equivalent sized satellite as our own, perhaps the Gravitational influence would have been enough to keep it's core fluid and dynamic. With out said impact Venuses core cooled to soon. As for Mars, it was struck by a theoretically large object, but unlike Earth didn't make a large satellite, but in stead blew bits of it's mass to the winds. Some of the material from that collision have been found Here on Earth. The remaini... [More]

More like a bombardment hit Mars.

I could be mistaken but I thought I read that there was still some geothermal activity on Mars. Plus I thought Mar's did have a weak magnetic field stronger in some area's and weaker in others.
