A bizarre contest held each year in the village of Marshwood near Bridport sees competitors battling it out to consume as many stinging nettles as they can handle, a tradition that was founded over 20 years ago and has attracted a lot of attention since.
There is no easy route to winning the World Stinging Nettle Eating Championship, held each year in the village of Marshwood near Bridport. It takes skill, it takes endurance ... it takes great blistering chunks out of what used to be your taste buds. "

this actually isn't as bad as it sounds. it's really quite easy to do. they fold the leaves a certain way so not to get stung from the nettle. never tried it myself but i've seen someone do it. So kind of like oragami with leaves?

Still wouldn't fancy trying it though, the leaves would need to be folded up very tight, else they could open and sting you. Think I prefer the idea of nettle wine http://www.brew-magic.co.uk/Wine_recipes/Nettle_wine.aspx

You can eat nettles, nettke soup and tea is a favourite of mines. The hairs that sting you are only on one side of the leaf so u can fold em and eat em with a low chance of getting stung. Its no dangerous, much like eating lots and lots of lettuce and they have been doing it for ages. Look up cheese rolling, they have multiple spinal injuries every year :-) far far worse lol

A very sore stomach I should think! Even worse if one happens to overeat and vomits!

I never knew you could eat them. Although I would prefer cooked. Boric acid is some nasty stuff, hopefully the quanitity in the plants is low enough not to do much harm. You can drink them in tea, it's one of my favourites, nettle and peppermint tea. I know you can make soup with them too.
