Extinct animals could be brought back to life

While the idea of bringing extinct species back to life has so far been the subject only of science fiction, thanks to advances in DNA technology we could someday soon be seeing mammoths and even neanderthals walking the Earth once again.
The idea of resurrecting extinct animals moved a step closer to reality last year when scientists announced that they had decoded almost all of the genome of the woolly mammoth, from 60,000-year-old remains found frozen in Siberia. Now New Scientist magazine has named the 10 other beasts most likely to rise again, including the Irish elk deer whose antlers measured 12 feet across, the dodo and Neanderthal man."

great now people can repair some of the damage that they caused , when they made extinct the dodo and lets hope the tasmanian tiger will get cloned , the only problem is that the clones has a weak imunitat system , and i think it wont like in Jurassic park cuz like thylacine and dodo werent giant ,nor went extinct by natural causes ,people hunted them

Bring back the Neanderthals so they can watch Geico commercials "So easy even a caveman can do it." No need to Bring them back! They are still here, but sleep all day, then go to the Bars and Pubs around the World!

No need to Bring them back! They are still here, but sleep all day, then go to the Bars and Pubs around the World! No lets bring them back and teach them how to clone homo sapiens when we go extinct. They might repay us the favour.

Jbondo -- you mean like "Planet of the Apes" and Jurassic Park" scenarios, maybe? Hhmmm. That said, if you read the whole article, all this is still in the theoretical stage and taking theory into practice is still possibly a decade or more into the possible future on this. I really wasn't thinking about movies when I said that. I just know sooner or later these animals would end up loose. Also, I am quite aware of the timetable and possibilities of it all. Scientists tend to be selfish by nature and a great number of them care little about how what they are doing affects the rest of us as lon... [More]

I really wasn't thinking about movies when I said that. I just know sooner or later these animals would end up loose. Also, I am quite aware of the timetable and possibilities of it all. Scientists tend to be selfish by nature and a great number of them care little about how what they are doing affects the rest of us as long as they attain their goals. A good example is the first atomic bomb tests although the military was involved. Finally, I am very animate about reading prior to posting. Yes, I did read the entire article. I guess no one really knows what the true impact of such an undertak... [More]

Hmm.... Or we could focus on all of the endangered species that we are responsible for killing off at the moment, and keep them around. Then we wouldn't have to map genomes, and spend time and money on cloning.. Just a thought. But who am I?
