Conservationalists have revealed that one third of the world's shark species are under risk of extinction due to overfishing. Sharks are vulnerable because they can take a long time to mature and do not produce many young.
Overfishing threatens to drive a third of the world's open-ocean shark species to extinction, say conservationists. Hammerheads, giant devil rays and porbeagle sharks are among 64 species on the first ever red list for oceanic sharks produced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)."

Of course, it is incredibly statistically likely that affecting our world ecosystem in such a drastic way will bring great harm to our own species, but too few realize this.
