State governors in Illinois have declared that Pluto has been unfairly demoted to the category of 'dwarf planet', a sentiment shared by many members of the public who agree that there should still be nine planets in the solar system.
How many planets are in the solar system? The official answer is eight - unless you happen to live in Illinois. Earlier this year, defiant Illinois state governors declared that Pluto had been unfairly demoted by the International Astronomical Union, the authority that sets the rules on all matters planetary.

how much do we know about space? if planet earth is located where pluto lies, it will indeed disqualify as a planet and vice versa. um no. where a body orbits in our solar system does not "disqualify" something as a planet. What you have written is blatantly false. And we know a great deal about space.

i rteally dont care what they call it the stupid thing is that they spent billions of dollars just to change its rep. they could have fed the homless or something productive.

to be called a planet, an object must have three traits. 1. It must orbit the sun, 2. be big enough that its own gravity pulls it to a round shape, 3. be dominant enough to clear away objects in its local area. a dwarf planet has two of those traits 1. it must orbit the sun and 2. have a nearly round shape. Ceres and UB313 and xena , are also debated as dwarf planets but it was first thought that Xena would be a candidate for a planet andding to the list in our system. Honey I shrunk the Solar system NASA When you look at these requirments you could in fact say that Earth is a Dwarf planet bei... [More]

jupiter could be a dwarf planet too. it hasn't cleared it's orbit. But it is big enough to hold its own gravity forming a round shape.

I havn't heard that they spent billions of dollars reclassifying Pluto they probably spent a few dollars on food for the function but thats all it amounts to, where did you come accross your information about it being billionss of dollars.

It's not the location it's the size. Also the fact that Pluto's orbit is erratic and oval shaped (there are times when it's closer to the sun than Neptune), shows that it's actually just a really large iceball of the Kuiper belt. true as opposed to Xena which holds a steady orbit.

Why do people care about what it is called until we can go close enough to it?

Well, lucky they didnt call it something even smaller...Whats the problem if there are only 8 planets in the solar system?
