A NASA plane bristling with ice-penetrating radar and other equipment is flying over the Antarctic to help replace a dying satellite that was monitoring polar ice and has revealed a dynamic and complex world beneath.
A NASA DC-8 plane equipped with lasers, ice-penetrating radar, and a gravity meter is revealing a dynamic and complex world beneath the massive ice sheet that covers Antarctica.

I bet it's Atlantis! First we get to make the skeptics look stupid by proving Atlantis exists, and next we get to prove God exists with the god particle!!! Now that would be something if Atlantis did infect Exist image what we could Learn

I am so proud that no one has mentioned atlantis yet. I was actually getting ready to post "...Atlantis?"

I am so proud that no one has mentioned atlantis yet. Yea but of course we still have the ridiculous speculation about Antarctica melting. That is even more absurd. I hope that they will release maps outlining what they see under the ice. Then there will be more to talk about. Still it is very interesting news.

Most of the actual crust of Antactica is below sea level because over millions of years it has sunk under the weight of ALL THAT ICE on top of it. The topography should look relatively normal (if glaciated) but just displaced downwards. If Antactica were to thaw (a catestrophic event if I ever heard one, and thankfully we aren't talking that happening for a LONG time even in the most apocalyptic climate models) it would be under water for a while before the crust rebounded from the buoyancy of the continental crust floating on top of the mantle.

Be fun when they release the pictures of what's under there. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, that is more to discover. Also, as the globe heats up, and the ice melts, it might release any bacteria/spores into the air that have been lying dormant under the ice, like that episode of House where the druggie who had to raise his sibs started losing body fat and all the drugs and germs in his system started leaking out and killing him. After that settles out there will be a lot of fossils and new land for us to find and settle. We'd end up losing our coastlands and a lot of people, but gaining a continent that hasn't been seen since the dinosaurs died. Wow, this wants to make me wear... [More]

I wonder why NASA didn't mension the gigantic lake that mantains the temperature of 70 degrees. Also why didn't they mension the Mass Concentration (Mass Con) of metal at the foot of the lake that is circular and 5 miles wide? Funny, you'd think that they would see that with their top notch, state of the art, fantastic technology....... NASA is a freaking joke!

What? Nibs My guess is he is referring to the Wilkes Land Crater and Lake Vostok. Masscon Link "On the moon, you can look at craters, and the mascons are still there," von Frese said. "But on Earth, it's unusual to find mascons, because the planet is geologically active. The interior eventually recovers and the mascon goes away." He cited the very large and much older Vredefort crater in South Africa that must have once had a mascon, but no evidence of it can be seen now."Based on what we know about the geologic history of the region, this Wilkes Land mascon formed recently by geologic standar...
