Satellite TV "gagging" Earth signals

Dr Frank Drake has said that the digital age is effectively cutting us off from making interstellar communications.
The popular ET hunter emphasised that the Earth is basically surrounded by a 50 light year "shell" of electromagnetic radiation from television and radio broadcasts that makes it more difficult to transmit signals in to space and which masks us from any extraterrestrial civilization that may be listening.
Satellite television and the digital revolution is making humanity more and more invisible to inquisitive aliens on other planets, the world's leading ET hunter has said.

Also the notion that we are the only species anywhere in the cosmos ever to achieve space travel (albeit a feeble leap to our neighbouring rock) will one day be laughed at in the same way we laugh at the fact that we once thought as a species the world was flat etc. I have seen this idea bantered around a bit, and I do wonder. Do you feel there is no pinnacle, no boundaries, no matter what limits are found they can all be exceeded in one way or another? Water does not have to be H2O, light does not have to travel at 186,000 mps, we can add and subtract from the periodic table as we please... o... [More]

I wonder what they thought of Alf, Third Rock, Roswell and V?

Being that SETI determined last year that any transmition degrades into white noise at around a light-year or so, it seems to be a moot point.

If there were an alien species capable of interstellar space travel, on the kind of scale it would take to find Earth, I wouldn't put it past them to also have figured out better antennae array to filter out our signals.

I agree. They would definitely have a way to filter out the noise that our transmissions would create.

It's one of those "obvious in hind-sight" things.

@ OverSword You comment makes no sense to me, humans are the dominant species on planet earth because we developed the furthest and most likely took out any opposition along the way such as Neanderthals so it would be logical to assume that the same process happens on other worlds were one dominant species basically takes over the planet as we have and reaches at least the level of evolution that we humans have. In other words it is likely that any one planet would likely only have one type of life form on it capable of space travel as any others would have fallen by the wayside. A more releva... [More]

All the posts here have some sens behind them but i say that there is no need to stop transmitting messages that some intelligent life might find, but if they are so advanced why haven't we heard anything from them yet? The chances of us being the only race that exists in the galaxy are slim after all it is such a huge place so I vote we continue on sending messages to see what we find, but who knows... maybe some sort of life did find our messages and are here on earth, we just don't know about it. But this is just what i think

I don't think they are just looking for species capable of space travel just any noise that shows some sort of intelligent life.... even seti's transmissions turn into noise at a light year?
