New research conducted by Professor Joao Zilhao and colleagues places the extinction of the neanderthals at 37,000 years ago.
The neanderthals were prevelant for thousands of years before modern humans finally started to take over.
The paper, by Professor Joao Zilhao and colleagues, builds on his earlier research which proposed that, south of the Cantabro-Pyrenean mountain chain, Neanderthals survived for several millennia after being replaced or assimilated by anatomically modern humans everywhere else in Europe.

There a still few tribes alive near Paris.. they burn cars and trash, walk in groups with baseball bats and destroy everything in site.

I know it's probably pretty lame but... The evidence shows that Neanderthal were much like us, in terms of intelligence and general looks. They had their own developed culture and functioned fully separate from our early ancestors. TO see them being used as a insulting deion of modern persons or groups seems sort of... wrong to me.

I completely agree. Like calling people animals to signify depravity and evil. We, as a species, are much more depraved and evil than any animal I can think of. Hold on......my wife has asked me to exclude her from that generalisation!

What about calling people dinosaurs? One of the longest lasting and successful groups of animals ever.Never could see why it should be an insult.

I thought Gibraltar offered evidence that Neanderthal Man may have lasted up until as little as 25,000 years ago.

"Neanderthals survived for several millennia after being replaced or assimilated by anatomically modern humans everywhere else in Europe." What does this mean? Recent research into the Neanderthal genome doesn't support any theories of 'assimilation'. *So far* there's not enough evidence to believe they were assimilated by genetics or culture. 'Replacement' is also speculative. Neanderthals ceased to exist....the why's are still open to question.
