In a celebration of the history of the humble toilet the National Trust are commemorating the contributions of Thomas Crapper.
While it is a common misconception that Crapper invented the flushing toilet he was a skilled plumber and came up with several inovations including the lavatory ballcock.
Crapper was a Victorian plumber and inventor who revolutionised the nation's lavatories with his inventions. A National Trust spokesman said: "From early Roman loos and silver chamber pots to the elaborate 'thrones' of the rich and famous, National Trust properties are flushing out the history of the humble lavatory to mark this anniversary.
