An international team has solved one of the biggest mysteries in biology - how and why living cells age.
The new discovery won't produce any miracle cures to ageing but should provide scientists with what they need to produce better drugs for age related illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes.
One of the biggest puzzles in biology – how and why living cells age – has been solved by an international team based at Newcastle University, in north-east England. The answer is complex, and will not produce an elixir of eternal life in the foreseeable future.

Well Imagine the possibilities if you could live forever without aging how much could be accomplished how far you could go, we could colonize other planets rather easy then. The possibilities are endless, even if we couldn't stop it but slow it down tremendously would still be great. P.S. IMHO We're far from overcrowded, It's just cities are overcrowded because their not expanding fast enough, theirs plenty of room and land... Yeah in Kansas, take a look at China or India. People gotta eat too.

Well, the current research could lead in the short term to fewer disease related deaths, until nature evolves a way to overcome the new medicines. It'll be a very long time before we see immortality come out of this, and that'd be agelessness, not living forever. No one will live forever, an accident or murder will do in every last person.

Cool. So in a few more thousand years, we wil have human beings stacked ontop of each other as there will be no room anywhere for them to stand...(being as how no one dies) probably fed intravenously by robots, who no doubt will have room....

There are any number of ways that youcan control global popualtions, unfortunately most of them are unfair, cruel and un-ethical.... not that such concerns have ever stopped the human race before! You could..... 1. Have more wars, wars kill people, they also give a fantastic economic boost to whoever is making and selling the weapons. Engineering wars to keep poulations down and people employed would be a fairly simple affair, but its not very nice. 2. Plagues, bacteria and virus's kill people, you could simply release e-bola into a highly populated city, wait 6 weeks then roll in and start bu... [More]

I always knew this would be the generation that the lifespan takes a dramatic jump. This is why I try and stay healthy, and exercise a lot, so that someday hopefully I'll be able to reap the benefits of this.

Just to clarify what I mean by saying, taking care of myself will allow me to reap the benefits of this. I would assume people who have led a healthy life, or have genetic issues will be the first to benefit. Just like an alcoholic would be on a long list for a liver transplant. People who don't take care of themselves, smoke, drink, and have markers for disease through their own lazy lifestyles would be less likely to receive any benefit. That is of course, if this actually ends up being anything.

Can someone paste the whole article here? I read about halfway through before a popup window appeared, and now I can't get back to the article page without it erroring out and taking me to the ad window again.

Pasting the whole article isn't an option for copyright reasons, if you close your browser and try accessing it again it should work - I had the same problem and that seemed to do the trick. Alternatively try clearing your browser's cache and see if that helps.

I agree with the over crowding.... the solution is sooo simple as well it drives me nuts. And no my solution does not involve forced sterilization or genocide or anything of the like. We are still waiting for that solution. All ears!
