Satellite speed cameras on the horizon

New speed cameras that can track the speed of motorists from orbit are currently being tested in the UK.
The new cameras are capable of number plate recognition and unlike conventional speed cameras that are set up to track motorists along a single stretch of road the new orbital version could track motorists over a wide area.
The cameras, which combine number plate reading technology with a global positioning satellite receiver, are similar to those used in roadworks. The AA said it believed the new system could cover a network of streets as opposed to a straight line, and was “probably geared up to zones in residential areas. ”

No, i'm totally surprised shocked they could conceive even contemplate such a thing. For more safer roads..prompt & efficient revenue raising? So absolutely true, in France motorists are the cash cows of revenue service, cops are receiving bonuses after a certain quota of tickets, and when they don't have it they lie. I experienced that, when I called the cop a liar he want to arrest me, my US passport saved from the arrest but not from the ticket. A man was arrested for speaking on the phone while driving yet he didn't have a cell phone in the car...

I knew it was just a matter of time, remeber Enemy of the state? I don't think the satellites described here are used for imaging at all. Just for the GPS part of it.

Codehook... I hope your not implying that the "number plate reading technology" cameras are on a satellite. That type of satellite is extremely expensive and used by the military, not for speeding tickets. Rather, the cameras used for this are earth based. The ONLY connection with satellites is to gather GPS. Read the article again.

In my city they released the speed cameras because they were making so much money off of them.

In my city they released the speed cameras because they were making so much money off of them. Absolutely, but they have to get a clear shot of your face here in AZ. Remember this guy in Phoenix? http://www.aolnews.com/story/driver-wears-monkey-mask-in-speed-camera/661005 Beyond learning the word that they were never taught, "No," Cornelius has discovered other ways to undermine human authority.

I thought you were saying that the overall system is not used for imaging in any way. But yes, you are correct of course...the cameras simply communicate with satellites to track cars via GPS.

Haha I never heard about this! I know that our local radio station John Jay and Rich, John Jay never payed the fines even though his face was clearly seen. Theres just a tiny loop hole which says you don't have to if 3 months after the photo was taken passed because you "never" received it in th... [More]
